How to read this list
The three groups above are trades rather than categories, and the difference matters when you are choosing.
Cabinet maker covers the two services that keep your existing cabinetry and change what is on it — refacing, which replaces the doors and drawer fronts and sprays the boxes, and refinishing, which keeps the doors and takes them back to bare timber. Both are for kitchens where the boxes are sound, which is most kitchens.
Painter covers everything that goes through the spray booth. Kitchen cabinets are the bulk of it. The rest is doors, trim, mantels, built-ins and furniture, plus wood staining where the intention is to show the grain rather than cover it.
Kitchen remodeler covers countertops. We specify, price, contract and schedule them; the stone shop templates, fabricates and installs. That division is fixed and we would rather say it here than let the category name imply otherwise.
What no group covers is walls, floors, plumbing or electrical work. Two trades, honestly held, and a short list of contractors for the parts that are not ours.
Why the list is short
Eight services is fewer than most kitchen companies advertise, and the difference is not capability so much as willingness to say no.
A company that lists thirty services is subcontracting most of them. That is not dishonest in itself — somebody has to hold the contract — but it does mean the person quoting your kitchen has never done most of the work they are selling, and cannot tell you which parts of it are hard. We would rather be the specialist you were referred to than the generalist you found first.
What that costs us is the jobs where somebody wants one invoice for a whole renovation. What it buys you is that the person who quotes the spraying has sprayed, the person who quotes the doors has built them, and when something is wrong there is nobody to point at.
What to send when you ask
Wide photographs of every run of cabinet. Not close-ups — the single most common thing that slows a quote down is a set of detailed shots of one door and nothing showing the room.
Stand back far enough that a whole run fits in the frame, including the pantry and the island if there is one. Photograph each wall separately. If a cabinet is damaged, photograph that too, and photograph the inside of the sink base whether or not you think there is a problem there.
That is enough for a fixed written price inside 24 hours, on any of the eight services above, and the price does not change afterwards.
Questions
Choosing between them
- I do not know which of these I need.
- Most people do not, and it is not a failure of research — the three cabinet services look similar from outside and produce very different kitchens. The short version is that refacing gives you a different door, painting gives you the same door in a different colour, and refinishing gives you the same door with the timber showing. Send photographs and we will tell you which one your kitchen is asking for.
- Can I have more than one?
- Frequently, and it is usually cheaper than doing them separately. Cabinets and countertops in one project means the kitchen shuts once. Woodwork quoted alongside a kitchen costs less than the same woodwork on its own, because the containment is already up and the crew is already there.
- Do you do full kitchen renovations?
- No, and it is worth being plain about it. We hold two trades — cabinetmaking and spray finishing — and we contract stone and tile to people who do nothing else. Walls, floors, plumbing and electrical are not ours. A company that says yes to all of it is subcontracting most of it.
- Which one is cheapest?
- Painting, almost always, because you are buying labour and material rather than cabinetry. That does not make it the right answer — a perfect finish on a door profile you dislike is money spent on the wrong problem. We will say which service fits before quoting the one you asked about.
