That qualification is the whole page. Stone chosen and fitted alongside cabinet work is a different exercise from stone swapped onto cabinets nobody is touching — different constraints, different risks, and a different order of operations. Both are countertop work and only one of them is this one.
We specify, price, contract and schedule. The stone shop templates, fabricates and installs. That division is fixed and we would rather state it on every page than have anyone discover it on the day.
The order, and why it cannot be rearranged
Cabinets are fitted. Cabinets are left to settle. The fabricator templates the finished run. The stone is cut. The stone is installed.
Every step in that sequence depends on the one before it, and the dependency is physical rather than administrative. A template is a full-size record of the actual cabinets, in their actual positions, after they have been scribed to a floor that is not level and walls that are not plumb. Take it before the cabinets are in and you have measured a drawing.
This is the single most common thing that goes wrong when a homeowner books stone and cabinets separately. The fabricator has a slot on Tuesday, the cabinet crew finishes on Thursday, and either the template is taken early — producing stone that does not fit — or the stone waits weeks for the next available slot and the kitchen stays open.
Through one contract, the template date is set against the cabinet completion date and moves with it.
The template visit, in detail
It takes a couple of hours and three things get decided.
Sink and hob positions are confirmed against the actual units, not the plan. Cutouts are made at the fabricator, not on site, so a position agreed here is a position committed to.
Overhangs are agreed, and this is where our trade meets theirs. The fabricator specifies what a given overhang needs by way of support — a breakfast bar carrying weight at its edge cannot cantilever off a cabinet indefinitely. Providing that support is carpentry, which is ours, and it is built before the stone arrives rather than improvised under it.
Seams, where a run is longer than a slab. This conversation belongs to the fabricator and we tell people to be there for it, because a seam is a visual decision as much as a technical one. It can fall in the middle of a working run where you see it daily, or be moved toward a corner where you do not, and the person who will live with it should choose.
What arrives, and what happens on the day
Installation is usually a single day. The stone comes in as pieces, is dry-fitted, adjusted, then bonded and sealed at the joints.
Plumbing disconnection and reconnection sit either side of it. The sink goes off before the old top comes out and back on after the new one is in, which is where the few days without a working sink come from.
What we ask for at the end is that nothing sits on the stone for a day. It is not that the material is fragile — it is that a silicone joint wants to cure without being loaded, and the difference between a joint that lasts and one that opens in year three is often that first twenty-four hours.
What we would tell you to decide early
Three things get chosen late by most people and are much easier chosen early.
The sink. Undermount or drop-in changes the cutout, and an undermount changes what the fabricator has to do to the edge of the aperture. It also has to be in their hands before they cut, so a sink still on order is a slab still waiting.
The edge profile. A square edge, a small radius and a full bullnose are three different amounts of machining and three different prices, and on a long run the difference is not trivial. It is also one of the few decisions that is genuinely about taste rather than about function.
Whether the island is doing something different from the perimeter. Plenty of kitchens use one material throughout and plenty use a contrasting island, and the second costs less than people assume because an island is a small area. Deciding it before templating means one visit rather than a change of mind afterwards.
None of these can be altered once the slab is cut. That is not a sales pressure, it is the nature of cutting stone to a template — there is no adjusting a countertop after the fact, and a decision deferred is a decision made under time pressure on the day.
Installation and replacement are different jobs
This page is about new stone going in while the cabinets underneath are changing. Where the cabinets are staying exactly as they are and only the top is being swapped, the constraints are different and so is the risk — the old top has to come off something that has to survive it. The page above sets the two beside each other, and which of the two a kitchen is actually having is usually obvious once somebody says it out loud.

Stone is priced per square foot by the fabricator and the number depends on the material, the thickness, the edge profile and how much of it there is. That figure comes to you as a line in one quote rather than as a separate transaction you make later.
Cutouts, overhangs and seams move the price more than area does. An island with a waterfall edge, a large undermount sink and a hob cutout is materially more fabrication than a straight run of the same square footage, and any quote that does not ask about them is not a quote for your kitchen.

- Why can't the stone be templated from the plans?
- Because cabinets as installed are never exactly cabinets as drawn. Floors are out of level, walls are out of plumb, and boxes get scribed to fit them. A template taken from a drawing is a template of a kitchen that does not exist, and stone cut to it does not sit down.
- How long between the cabinets and the stone?
- Enough for the cabinets to be fitted and settled, then the template visit, then fabrication. The lead time on fabrication depends on the slab — something held in stock moves quickly, something ordered in does not. We give you the date once the slab is confirmed rather than guessing at it up front.
- What do I do about the sink in between?
- Live without it, and plan for it. Between the old top coming off and the new one going on there is no worktop and no sink, which is usually a matter of days rather than weeks. It is the part of the schedule people forget to ask about and the part they feel most.
- Can I choose the slab myself?
- Yes, and for anything with movement in it you should. Quartz patterns are consistent enough to choose from a sample; a porcelain with veining is worth seeing as a whole slab at the fabricator, because where the vein falls on your island is decided by which part of it gets cut.
- Who is responsible if the stone is wrong?
- We are. The contract is with us, so a slab cut wrong or delivered late is our problem to solve rather than a phone number we hand you. What sits with the fabricator is the one-year warranty on the stone itself, and we say so plainly rather than letting the single contract imply otherwise.
